Health Services

Nepal is one of the richest in culture, tradition, and knowledge of Ayurveda and traditional health practices. The majority of people in Nepal continue to rely on this system of health care.
Its medicines are said to be cheap, without any toxic side effects and capable of radical cure of the diseases not treatable by modern medicine. Recent data of Ayurveda Medicines and Human studies showed that ayurveda is equally effective in all type of diseases.

Furthermore, the geographical structure and advanced bio-diversity has made it possible for the Himalayan country to lodge numbers of valuable medicinal plants. The medicinal and Aromatic database of Nepal covers 1624 species of plants found in wild state or cultivated or naturalized or imported belonging to 938 genera and 218 families. These are known to be used as medicine in Nepal. So it is often equated with herbal medicines and Nepal being rich in medicinal herbs. Ayurveda is claimed to eminently suitable for this country for utilizing its herbal resources towards self sufficiency in health care. There is thus immense potential for these herbs for the manufacture of Ayurvedic drugs not only for the domestic purposes but also for the export to India and other countries. The global market of herbal business is continuously upraising. The estimation of total herbal medicine sale reported in country wise European Union was about US$ 6 billion in 1991 and $ 4 billion in 1996, of which almost half were sold in Germany $ 3 billion, in France $ 1.6 billion, in Italy $ 0.6 billion and in Japan $ 1.5 billion. The present global market is said to be US 250 billion (Brower et al., 1998). In India the sale of total herbal products is estimated at $ 1 billion and the export of herbal crude extract is about $ 80 million, of which 50% is contributed by Ayurvedic classical preparations. Plant derived drugs are important in Germany and Russia. Nepal at present imports Ayurvedic drugs of more than 200 cores rupees and it is increasing 25% each year.
